The Transgender Wellness Workgroup of the Long Beach HIV Planning Group (HPG) is dedicated to advancing health equity, reducing HIV and STI disparities, and fostering a supportive and empowered community for transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Through collaborative action, advocacy, and direct engagement, we address the intersecting barriers that impact the well-being of transgender individuals, including housing, employment, gender-affirming care, and inclusive programs and services. Our work is rooted in community-driven solutions that enhance access to HIV prevention, treatment, and holistic wellness services to improve health outcomes and quality of life for transgender people in Long Beach.
Testing & Screening
We recognize that transgender individuals, particularly Black and Brown trans women, experience disproportionately high rates of HIV and STIs due to systemic inequities and barriers to care. Our workgroup is committed to:
Expanding free and accessible HIV testing, STI screening, and PrEP/PEP services in safe and affirming settings.
Providing trauma-informed, harm reduction-based approaches to prevention and care.
Partnering with clinics and community organizations to increase outreach and education tailored to the transgender community.
Gender-Affirming Care
We know that gender-affirming healthcare is essential healthcare and plays a vital role in HIV prevention, mental health, and overall well-being. Our workgroup advocates for:
Expanding access to hormone therapy, gender-affirming surgeries, and trans-inclusive primary care.
Training healthcare providers to offer competent, respectful, and culturally responsive care.
Providing peer navigation and support networks to help individuals access gender-affirming medical and mental health services.
Housing & Employment
Stable housing and economic security are critical social determinants of health that impact HIV prevention and treatment outcomes. Our workgroup works to:
Address housing instability and homelessness by partnering with trans-inclusive housing programs.
Support job training, career development, and employment opportunities to empower transgender individuals financially.
Advocate for legal protections and anti-discrimination policies in housing and workplaces to ensure safety and stability.
Community & Policy
Social connection and community-led initiatives are essential to reducing isolation and improving access to healthcare. Our workgroup focuses on:
Organizing affirming and empowering community events that foster peer support networks.
Strengthening partnerships with LGBTQIA2S+ organizations and public health agencies to improve services.
Advocating for trans-inclusive policies in healthcare, housing, and employment at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure long-term systemic change.
The Transgender Wellness Workgroup is community-led and community-driven. We welcome transgender individuals, allies, healthcare providers, and community advocates to join us in creating a more inclusive and healthier Long Beach. Together, we can break down barriers, reduce HIV disparities, and build a future where all transgender people have access to the care, resources, and support they deserve.
The workgroup meets virtually on the first Wednesday of the month. To join the group and for more details, please contact:
